Why Your Hair Won't Grow

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HEALTHY HAIR GROWTH

"At a certain point my hair just stops growing."

As a stylist I hear this all the time.

The thing is, there’s no such thing as your hair having a max growth point. What’s happening is that your hair is breaking.  If your hair isn’t getting longer, it's because it's growing a 1/4 inch at the scalp and breaking a 1/4 inch at the ends.

Most common causes of breakage are:

Excessive heat styling

Blow dryer, Flat iron, Curling Iron, Wands, Rollers, etc.

Chemically altering Your hair color

Using a shampoo & conditioner that isn’t moisturizing enough

Combing Your hair aggressively when wet or tying it up too tightly

Now, I am a glamour girl, and I believe that you can have exactly the hair color you want, and do all of the heat styling your want, at whatever length you want — but you have to take very good care of your hair!

Hair breaks because it’s dry. Dry hair is brittle, and brittle hair breaks off. You have to keep your hair moisturized enough to prevent breakage.

Here are my 3 most important points to prevent breakage:

1. Moisture

wash your hair often

Yeah, I said it… it’s my personal belief your hair is better off getting that conditioner on it in the shower everyday — as opposed to 4 days dirty, gross, and all dried out in some hideous top knot.

shampoo and conditioner

If you cannot easily detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb immediately after towel drying, then it’s not hydrating enough. Always get into the shower and immediately shampoo your hair, then apply conditioner. Leave the conditioner in while you do everything else in the shower so that it’s on your hair for as long as possible

TREATMENTS

You have to do at least two deep treatments a week. Masks (Kérastase Oleo Relax Mask is my holy grail) night serums, hair oils, professional in-salon treatments. Mix it up, hair likes change.

more moisture

Add additional moisture to your ends at least once a day. Mid-day or before bed, put a little serum or hair oil on your ends.

2. HAIRCUTS

TRIMMING

Don’t trim your hair more then every 8-12 week

COMMUNICATION

Make sure your stylist knows you’re growing your hair out and doesn’t cut more then you’ve both agreed on.

3. PROTECTIVE STYLES

Buns, Braids, etc.

Your hair likes being bundled together, just not too tightly.

MOISTURIZER

Always add a moisturizer before the protective style (I especially love Oribe Super Shine for this)

Get to know your hair; start paying attention to how the products you use each day affect your hair. I always say, “I don’t care if it’s $10 or $1,000, if it’s not working then it’s the wrong product.”

Try something else and see how your hair responds to it. Is it limp and lifeless? Then it’s too heavy. Is it frizzy, static-y, or tangled? Then it’s not heavy enough.

What you’re looking for is similar to the perfect moisturizer for your face, you want it to sink right in and nourish without leaving a heavy residue behind.

If you love big hair like me, dry shampoo your roots. That’s totally fine, just keep those ends moisturized :)
